Go On In Peace, Bessie!

Today, a friend passed; however I like to think that Bessie did not just "pass".  I like to think that Bessie "passed forward" - not just passed from this world.  Who knows what happens to the soul of a dog when they pass?  I do believe, however, that dogs and other pets and all living things probably have souls.  Why?  Because I see all living things - including humans - as having some sort of consciousness about them; and I relate consciousness to a soul.

If Bessie was truly conscious as a living being, then as far as I can see it and know it, Bessie likely had a soul - a soul which left her body when she passed earlier today - just like it probably happens to us all when we die.  Our souls as entities of themselves that just choose to incarnate within fleshly vessels probably leave a used carcass behind when we die - or better put, when our bodies die.  It just makes sense to me.

You see, Bessie was a 15 year old black and white Border Collie that belonged to my dear friend, Nancy, for just over 15 years.  I have only known Bessie for a few years, but for Nancy, Bessie had been a wonderful pal for over 15 years; and now, Bessie is gone - so to speak.

At about 3:30 P.M. this afternoon, a very compassionate Vet named Christa Branch, aided Bessie forward by putting her to sleep.  Bessie had been failing for sometime now - and was fast losing her ability to be mobile.  She had some kind of a stomach tumor and her legs could hardly support her anymore.  So, Nancy decided that it was time for Bessie to be released from her pain and this current world.  I agreed; and so did Bessie's Vet, Christa.

Having had the wonderful experience of helping many a helpless animal pass on via an easy sleep like passing, Christa expressed that it would be nice if we humans could someday allow that for our fellow pained humans too.  I realize there may be some complications we would have to work out to act as humane with our fellow human beings as we are with our animal pets, but I do agree it might be very worthwhile to allow for it.  What do you think?

Getting back to Bessie, she was the 4th dog I have witnessed being put to sleep in my life.  The other 3 belonged to me when I lived in Georgia awhile back.  In the order in which they passed, Kerry passed at the age of 14.  Tybee passed at the age of 12; and Elyse passed at the age of 16; and now I was there for Bessie to pass at the age of 15.  The one thing I noticed about all four animals when they passed is that they all passed very calmly and with their eyes wide open.

I mentioned that factor of the eyes of my dogs being wide open when they fell to sleep at the aid of a vet to Christa; and Christa smiled at me and said that she thought that is because they want to "see where they are going".  Thanks, Christa!  I think that is a beautiful way to put it.  And who does not want to "see where they are going" when they die?  Very aptly put, Christa!

I'd like to thank Bessie for helping me put life and death into perspective, though.  If I will only pay attention to the real tale of death, I can know from sweet Bessie that when I go, it won't be much different than when Bessie went today.  If Bessie could talk, I am sure she would say that I should not fret about going; and I want to thank dear friend, Bessie, for that.

I can hear Bessie now - "My brother, don't you worry none about going where I just went today.  Hey, you are not too far behind, you know.  Let me tell, you, though, from one who is experiencing it, death ain't what it is cracked up to be by you humans.  My soul is seeing things the way things really are now; and it is really quite nice.

"And let me tell you, My Friend, that you were all wrong about my seeing God face to face when I died.  I looked for that God as soon as I passed over and I did not see anyone even remotely resembling such a one.  You know, I always suspected that you were wrong in expecting to see a God after passing; and now I know you were wrong.  But I did see that everything is really a Paradise.  I suspect that is what you meant when you told me I would see God face to face.  Well, in that light, you were right.  I am seeing God face to face and that face is everywhere I look because God is everywhere I look.

"I'd also like to assure you that the fellow you called Satan was not around when I passed either.  I know you told me that if I were not a good doggie that when I passed, one called Satan might be ready to collar me and take me to his dungeon - or wherever it is that your friend called Satan lives.  But I passed - and even though I was not always a good doggie and disobeyed Nancy now and then, there was no Satan to snatch me up.  Even if there had been a Satan, I did not have a collar when I passed.  So how could anyone have snatched me by a collar I no longer had?  Tell me that, oh wise one!

"By the way, Will, I like to tell you that even in life I thought you had your Satan wrong.  Even as a pup - without the brains you humans pride yourselves on having - I could not figure out how there could even be a Satan as some supposed opposition to the one you call God when it makes no sense at all that a truly infinite God can have any opposition.  How can anything that is everywhere be opposed by an entity that is only somewhere - like your claimed opponent of God you called Satan?  Again, tell me how that can be, oh wise one!

"Don't you agree that it is bit crazy, Will, to say one thing and then immediately contradict what you said.  I may have chosen to be a dog this time around, but even a dog can sense a contradiction.  Let me repeat.  You told me that God resides in this place you called Heaven and that there was another place that God does not visit you called Hell.  But how can it be?  I wanted to ask you that, My Friend, on our many walks.  How can God be everywhere because He is God - and still be absent from this place you call Hell?  I must tell you, My Friend, that did not make any sense to me at all; and I sure do wonder why it seemed to have made sense to you.

"Well, I am 'over here' now - and there ain't no Satan.  All I can see is what you might call a 'Paradise'.  And if I were you in that human body of yours now, I would open my eyes while I was still alive and realize you have always been living in Paradise.  You just didn't know it.  It happens with you humans a lot.  If I were to give you any advice as a passed doggie, I would suggest that you put away all that nonsense about a Satan waiting to take you to Hell when you die and realize there ain't no Hell - leastwise not one where such a one called Satan can live and God cannot.  It can't be so.  Any dog knows that; and maybe it's time you humans caught up with us doggies.

"And by the way, My Friend, you might be a doggie when you come back to another life on Earth and I might be a human.  Who knows?  I might just choose as a soul to occupy a human form next time around - and you might choose to be a doggie like I was last time.  Who can tell?  But let me tell you, My Friend, if you are a doggie and I am like my old master, Nancy, I hope I am like Nancy and am as good to my doggie as she was to me.  You tell her that.  OK?

"Well, My Friend, it is time for me to be going and get on with sniffing my way around here.  I was really good at that sniffing thing when I was with you and Nancy, you know; and we doggies know how to sniff and check things out.  In passing - oh, pardon the pun - I'd like to suggest that you learn how to sniff too - and don't be so easily mislead as to believe all that corny stuff about Satan - and God sentencing bad souls to the care of Satan when they die and all of that baloney.

"Hey, you said it.  Just believe it.  God is in everything and is everywhere and because that is so, everywhere is Paradise.  It is not brain science, you know.  It is 'soul science' - and as one soul to another, I suggest you get on with living your life as a grateful pup.  I was one; and I know just how wonderful it was.

"Tell my master, Nancy, not to fret about not having me - and tell her I thank her for being there with me and for me all that wonderful 15 years we were together; and tell my Beagle companion, Gypsy, that she ought to enjoy her walks when she can have them because there will come a day when she too - and every one of you - will pass over as I just have.

"It is pretty nice, though.  Just think of my being in Doggie Heaven - and it is just as nice here as it was there with Nancy - and my old friend, Joce, who was with Nancy when the two of them picked me up at a dog shelter and gave me a home when I was just a three month old pup.  As a matter of fact, I just saw Joce.  He told me to tell you to tell Nancy that he was glad he died at home after being happily married to Nancy for thirty years; but he ain't dead - as he says.  It just looks that way.

"Gotta go!  Got lots of things to do; but don't be surprised if we meet again in another life and it seems we have known each other all our lives.  It just might come to pass, you know.  We could meet again - and next time you will be a pup and I will have chosen a human form.  We souls can do that, you know.  Hmmmmm, I wonder what it would be like to choose a human form next time.  I think I will check it out and see.

"Bow Wow, for now!  That's doggie for 'Glad to have known you'!  Bye, Bye!"

Until next time, for Bessie, Gypsy, and Nancy - and me - Adieu!
