HAPPY LABOR DAY!

Labor Day, 2013

Hello, Everyone,

HAPPY LABOR DAY!    It would be nice if labor itself is a "happy event," but it seems we live in a world where labor is not dealt with properly.  Too many who hire workers hire them for less than the workers can live by in order to provide more for themselves.  Too bad because that results in a terrible imbalance between those who hire and those who are hired.  Consequent to that, if people cannot earn a living wage, they just stop working or have to stress themselves by working a second job to pay the bills - or simply resort to crime to make what they should have been able to make by working for a living wage.  If only those who hire would put themselves into the shoes of those they hire and ask themselves - "if I were in your shoes, would I like to be treated that way?"

Hey, that is a line from the current play we seniors of Laramie are putting on in October.  I have a brief part and play a very old man in the play who asks someone who is trying to steal my walking cane - IF YOU WERE IN MY SHOES, WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE TREATED THAT WAY?  Smart line, I think, and terrific advice.  If only those who hire would ask that of themselves when they hire another to do their work, just think of how different the world would be?  Right?

Be that as it may, be myself one who hires or one who is hired, let me respect the work I do simply because I can do the work.  I know that is not enough to pay the bills, but it sure is a great way to treat life itself.  And the rewards of simple labor can be terrific - if we pay attention to the results.

For example, I planted relatively little sunflower seeds this spring.  I realize that did not require much work, but it did require some - and look at the results - if I care to pay attention to the results.  All summer long, my sunflowers have been growing higher and higher, giving me pleasure in just watching them grow.  Now, I have a yard full of sunflowers that are almost literally like "little trees" - some even taller than me; and I am about 6 feet tall.  The bees are buzzing and enjoying them too - all because I took a little time to "work" in the spring and have "worked" a little all summer long to water the sunflowers to allow it all to happen.  Ah, the rewards of "simple labor"!  It is indeed a wonderful world we live in, but we do have to work a little in the process to really enjoy it.

Or so, I Believe!

Until next time, Adieu!
