Letter to Editor:About Election Fraud
1/21/22

Hello, Everyone!

Just to share my letter to the editor that will be featured in Sunday’s Laramie Boomerang. It Is about the Jan 6th, 2021 debacle that happened at our national capitol – and what we should do to avoid another such happening.

I don’t know about you, but It amazes me that so many – including perhaps a majority of a political party (Republicans) – could lend themselves to following one “deranged” individual (Donald Trump) in trying to counter the results of a national election via a planned assertion of election fraud. I mean how could anyone believe someone who announced years ahead that if he lost an election, it would be due to election fraud? That goes to indicate if he lost an election he would claim it was fraudulent; and yet that is exactly what Donald Trump has done.

If you remember back to 2016, Trump bellowed that he could not lose to such as a Hillary Clinton, but if he did, it would be due to election related fraud. Well, Donald Trump did not lose in 2016 – and therefore did not have to claim there had been election fraud; however he laid plain what he would do in 2020 if he lost then to whomever the Democrats would nominate. He laid the groundwork long before the elections of 2016 and 2020 of how he would react if he lost – and lo and behold, after his lost election of 2020, he did just as he claimed he would if he lost – and so many followed him in his claim, resulting in a myriad of lost souls storming our capitol in an effort to overturn a “fraudulent election.”

My editorial below is more about what we should do to avoid such a thing in the future. Let no one be allowed to claim fraud without providing proof of that claim; but if someone does claim election related fraud and does not provide proof, let that one be subject to an indictment of slander against a fellow competitor. That, in brief, is what my editorial is about. I know that the Jan 6 Congressional Committee looking into the Jan 6 debacle will be deciding on some legislation of their own to combat claims of election fraud in the future, but for what it’s worth, my brief editorial that I am sharing below tells what I would do – without need of further legislation. Read it if you like – and respond as you wish. OK?

Thanks!

SUBJECT: Should Trump Be Sued For Slander?

I realize that some indictments for the assault part of the January 6th, 2021 event are being handed down, but so far, no one is being tried for an “attempted insurrection.” Why not? I think the entire concept of insurrection is extremely serious within a government that considers itself a “democracy.” An insurrection in a democracy is only an effort to access power by non-democratic means. Part of non-democratic means is ignoring the official results of an election by whatever means – including accusing the process of fraud, often without providing any evidence that an election was fraudulent. Granted, election fraud is possible simply because any fraud is possible, but just because fraud is a possibility does not assure there was fraud – and one claiming fraud without proof is likely the fraudulent one.

In my opinion, to accuse a competitor of fraud without providing proof is not “free speech.” I think of it more as “slander.” If I were to lose an election and claim that I lost it because the process was fraudulent, I think I should be tried for slander against a competitor. Indict me for slander and require me to prove my claim in a court. An indictment is not a conviction, but within a democracy an indictment is only a means to an end. By way of court process, if I am proven not guilty of slandering you to win an election, then I will be acquitted. Again, an indictment is not a conviction, but a lack of an indictment may very well allow for false claims of fraud; and then it is the elections of 2020 all over again. Indict me for slander if I do not provide proof of claim; and then let the legal process take its course.

And that goes for everyone – from one claiming loss of election from a city council to a national presidency. For what it’s worth, at least, that is how I see it. How about you?
